Here is an article from ESPN in 2008: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=3501739

It counts down the most prestigious teams of the modern era. The modern era is defined as:

"when the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams, making it the first time a national champion had to win six tournament games to cut down the nets. It was also the start of the fairest inclusion in the NCAA tournament: Before that season, even the best conferences got only one team in the field. And with the introduction of the 3-point line in 1985-86, the past 24 seasons can be considered the most modern era of college basketball."

Right after KU won it in 2008, the top 6 were:
  1. Duke (538 points)
  2. KU (455)
  3. UNC (448)
  4. KY (378)
  5. Arizona (338)
  6. UCONN (292)
I thought I would recalculate using the same scoring system (in the link above), but only for the top 4. UCONN has 2 NCs, but they were so far behind point wise that I don't think they'd make the top 4 still. Probably just pass Zona for #5.

The new top 4 since 1984-85:
  1. Duke (676 points)
  2. KU (601)
  3. UNC (551)
  4. KY (549)

How I would readjust the scoring:

  • Winning the National Championship would be worth 40 points instead of 25. A 5 point difference between winning it all and being runner-up is not enough.
  • An NIT berth would be negative points. Probably -2.
  • A post-season ban would be -10.
  • I don't know how to change it, but having the best conference record in the Big 12 or SEC (as of late) is no where near as tough as doing it in the ACC or old Big East.

I used Wikipedia for some of the stuff I had to look up. If you get a chance, read "The Carolina Way" on UNC's men's basketball page. It's hilarious.

Since the 1980's advent of the modern rules that really define the game (shot clock, 3 pt line, 64 team tournament, etc.) there is really no question as to which program has been the best.

Great research FTB. I would agree as to negative points for missing the tourney and bans.

The best news is this confirms what we already knew. :)
