How many scholarships are available for 2015 and would we save one or more for 2016?

As of right now there are 7 scholarship players for the 15 roster. We may Thornton and Ingram to put us at 9, also forgot about that vrancovic guy or whatever his name is so we would still only have 9-10 in use

The NCAA allows D1 baskeball to have 13 scholarship players. With the players that we have coming back plus the players that we have coming in we have 8 scholarship players for next season. So that leaves us with 5 scholarships available for next season.

Marshall Plumlee
Amile Jefferson
Matt Jones
Grayson Allen
Sean Obi
Chase Jeter
Luke Kennard
Antonio Vrankovich

Yup, I don't think we need to worry about hitting our scholarship limits in the next few years. Even if we get up to 10 (with Thornton and Ingram), we're still going to have a minimum of 6 free spots for the 16 class if Ingram declares (as will be the expectation for him).

So Ingram is going to start next year without question then?

Yes, as the number 3 rated WF and Thornton the #2 PG, they are virtual locks, especially since Duke has no one else who naturally plays their positions, though Allen or Jones or Kennard could so so in a pinch.

2015 is admittedly a pretty weak class vis a vis prior years but Duke has 4 positions with a guy in top 5 with PG-2, WF-3, SG-4 and PF-4.

No other schools have more than 2:
UK has C-1 and PG-3,
Kansas has PF-1 and PF-5,
Calif Has WF-2 and PF-2,
Zona has SG-1 and WF-4 and
LSU has WF-1 and SG-3.

So the 25 best guys are spread out among 17 different teams.

Though Jeter are Kennard at rated 4th in their class as their positions, they have a lot more in terms of experience and quantity compettion across Jefferson/MP3/Obi and Allen/Jones.

Justin Robinson told 247sports that K called him and offered a scholarship for next year but added that he could not promise one for each of his 4 years there (I think it's a safe bet to say we will see him at Duke for 4 years). So it looks like the scholarship number going into the '15-'16 season will be 11.

We typically give the remaining 2 scholarships to walk-ons that are willing to work hard, with the same non-guarantee that Justin has. Nick Pagliuca is one, and I think we'll definitely pick up another player, be it Ainge or some other guy for practice/emergency. We lose 2 seniors after next season and will have 3 expendable slots currently filled by Justin Robinson, Nick Pags and whomever the 3rd guy is. That opens up 5 schollies for 2016, plus any early departures that may occur. That's pretty solid team management by K and Co.

The last time Coach K used all 13 scholarships on players that were recruited (not recruited walk-ons, mind you) was during the 1990-1991 season. I think it's similar to UNC and Jackson Simmons; he's probably too good to just be a typical walk-on, but should we need to reserve 13 spots, he might have to relinquish his spot. My guess is we don't use all 13 spots because we almost never do.

There is chatter about Crew Ainge seriously considering Duke

Just happy that Robinson got his scholly. Hope he turns into a pleasent surprise for us. OFC
