Ryan Kelly is a better pro than Hansbrough

Picked 13 th in NBA draft in 2009 TH gets paid 3.3 million while average 2.9 points per game this year. He is. 1-19 from 3 pt land. What a waste at pick 13 by Larry Bird.
Picked 48 th in 2013 draft Kelly earns 1. 6 million. He averaged 8 Pts a game last year and is averaging 4.6 this year after returning from injury. He has made 65-181 from 3 pt land. What a steal at the 48 th pick.
Just think how good Tyler could have been if UNC had a better big man coach.

Yeah, I thought Hansbrough would be better too. He's been a bit of a disappointment. I thought his work ethic would pay off more in the NBA. But it goes to show you nothing is guaranteed. I never thought he'd be a star....but I had him pegged as a decent role player. It hasn't happened yet.

As for Ryan, I think it's too soon to tell. He's playing on a very bad Lakers team and playing well. That said, I'm not sure I see him sticking it out in the NBA for another four more years like Hansbrough. Hope I'm wrong though.

Tyler had a couple of pretty good seasons earlier in his career, but his minutes and contributions have been declining ever since. With the right team he may bounce back yet.
Hopefully Ryan can keep improving and have a long NBA career.

Shavlik Randolph is still in the league. Lance Thomas is in the league. That's 2 big men that K got to the NBA...neither left school with the accolades or draft position that Hansflop had. The point is this...K is able to get marginal bigs into the league. THAT is a plus not a minus. Roy? Even at KU , his NBA production was meager. Other than Paul Pierce , what big man of note has Roy put in the league? Brandon Wright?

He's a career 7 and 3 journeyman. Never averaged even 19 minutes a game. Those numbers look even worse when ya factor in his draft status...8th overall. Thank you , Roy. The "Duke doesn't produce big men" argument is dead...has been for quite awhile. Hasn't stopped unx fans from regurgitating it though. Go figure.

The Plumlee brothers are really playing well - actually contributing more effectively in the NBA in some ways than at Duke. But, I think their size and leaping ability help them fit in the NBA (and they don't have to be scoring stars).

Ryan has a chance to make it but he still struggles defensively and has to improve his shooting. If he can work his butt off on improving his shooting and passing (ala a poor man's Dirk), at 6'11 he could be a great 3 point shooter. It's just hard to stop a 6'11 player shooting 3s. As long as he can do that, and continue to improve his shape and strength, he could stay a long time.

Shooters are always at a premium in the NBA - so that's a huge part of his game that he can and should develop.

Im not surprised that Tyler Hansbrough is a flop in the NBA. I am however surprised that Tyler Zeller isnt a better pro. I though his ability to run the floor and jump hooks would be effective in the league. I was worried about his lack of fight in the post though.

Sorry if I offended you by comparing Kelly to T.yler H. My point has more to do with a 48 th pick in the draft doing well by just continuing to be in the league. Few picks that high are still playing.
Another 13 th pick in draft that attended UNC was Ed Davis. He has played 5 years, makes 980,000.00 which is a steal for the Lakers. He averages about 8 points for his career.
Kendall Marshall was 13 th pick same year Zeller was 17 th pick.
I will be surprised if Kelly plays for many more years but Lance Thomas, Kelly , Shav and even Miles Plumlee have exceeded expectations in regards to playing in the league.
Rivers may still prove he was worth being picked so high but so far I would have to give him a C grade in the league.
If Kelly can continue in the league until he signs a new contract doubling his pay I would give him an A plus grade considering he was a 48 th pick.

I'm a little surprised by how poorly Hansbrough's played, but it's not shocking either. Although he did develop a bit of mid-range jumper later in his career, his game was fundamentally all about muscling younger / weaker bigs and relentlessly initiating contact -- that, in the ACC, often got him to the line. At the NBA, Hansbrough can't physically impose his will on the opposition and he's not getting a lot of those calls that he used to get when he wildly initiated contact with defenders -- which, notwithstanding his greatness as a collegiate player, made him intolerable to watch. If you go back and look at Hansbrough's collegiate numbers, he literally scored 982 pts. from the foul line (34% of his career total). Just, as a frame of reference, Okafor has scored about 17% of his points at the line.

Put simply, Hansbrough's style of play simply didn't translate for a guy who's only 6'9 and can't jump out of the gym. With that said, I would say it's a little surprising that he hasn't evolved more. Must guys with his height / weight will spend their careers extending their jump shot and ball handling to make themselves far more versatile, complimentary players. Hansbrough, for whatever reason, either hasn't done that or been able to do so. If you look at someone like McRoberts, for instance, he not only improved his jumper generally -- but even made himself into a decent 3 pt. shooter. Hansbrough's biggest problem IMO -- is that he's still basically the same player he was as a jr. at UNC.

They'll hold on to it until they reach the level they were at in 2008-2009. So, for a pretty long time. When you've fallen as far as UNC has, both on and off the court, you want to live in the past because your present and future sucks. And UNC sucks right now, both on and off the court, and it appears as if it won't be getting any better. In fact, if the NCAA does the right thing, then it's going to get MUCH worse for the Cheaters.
