Other rivals web sites have criticized the OAD culture and have said that One and Done players at schools like Kentucky and Duke dont' go to class after the first semester or the equivalent of that ( courses without classes like UNC). I don't believe that would happen at Duke and reflect back to the high graduation rate of Duke players in basketball and other sports. Does anyone know if the 3 freshman who are leaving finished their classes second semester? Also, any statis on players like Irving, Rivers or Parker , if they are still pursing degrees?

Yes, they have to finish their second semester or the APR gets crushed. Since Calipari has been at UK, the only one and done not to finish his second semester was Daniel Orton and he is basically black balled from the program because of it. I would almost guarantee Coach K has his guys in class. Nobody wants to end up like UConn.

Like ODD said in the other thread...you haven't posted in 10+ years and your first two posts are on the Duke board.

Good job!

Just like 2010, it's a shame KY couldn't get the job done so we could have seen a Duke/KY tournament game. Maybe next time Calipari will show his team some game film of the opposing team before a final four matchup.

All three are still pursuing their degrees from Duke. When Irving left for the draft that was an agreement between his father and him.

Rivers and Parker both are working on their degrees as well

  • I wish Calipari would show more film. However, he's made the final four 4 of the 6 years he's been in Lexington. I wouldn't trade him for any other coach in the country. Cal isn't the best bench coach in the country but he's better than he gets credit for. He can be out coached but he'll never consistently be outrecruited and that alone will have us threatening a title every year. He is so far superior to what we had with Tubby Smith it's not even close. You taking shots at UK for losing to West Virginia in 2010 and Wisconsin this year is fine, you also should have pointed out our 2013 humiliation against Robert Morris, but don't you think I could easily return the favor by pointing out your 2012 and 2014 tourney results? We won a title and finished runner up those 2 years. You lost to Mercer and Lehigh.
Here is where UK separates itself from any other program in the country. We have 8 national titles by 5 different coaches. That's a true mark of a great program. No other team even comes close to that. Rupp, Hall, Pitino, Tubby and Cal have all won. We'll see what the Devils are made of when K leaves. Will you be like UK and continue to be elite or will you be like UCLA post Wooden? It will be very interesting. I personally hope you hire one of Coach K's former assistants. Just pick 1. Capel, Amaker, Collins, Wojo or Dawkins would all look good running your program.

It is a bit of a tight rope with Cal. He is the best salesman in the game, and he can land kids (though this recruiting season hasn't been great for him). He's probably not in the elite category for in-game work (I would include guys like K, Izzo, Ryan, etc.), but he generally has the most future pros, and that will always give him a chance. His results since he has been at UK illustrate that. But he has to have the most talent, no margin for error. But again, with the way he recruits, that generally isn't a problem.

I would agree with that assessment 100%.

It would foolish of me not to admit that if Bo Ryan had UK's players and Calipari had Wisconsin's, the outcome of thei game would have been different. I'm a UK fan, but I'm not completely delusional.

I would put Pitino in that group as well. You give Pitino the players that Cal has, and he wouldn't lose a game.

I have got take a moment and really look at that statement.....so Rupp....great coach from a different era....Pitino....how is he treated by the Big Blue nation?.....Tubby....does he feel the warm embrace of the Wildcat faithful.....heck you're even throwing him under the bus of your own post....Wow.

With regards to our poor post season showing a couple of seasons. You're right -- they were awful and it sucked. It sucked a lot less than getting banded from post-season play.

That's my point about the UK program. Tubby and Joe B. Hall were not elite coaches by any stretch of the imagination but yet both still won national championships at UK. Look at what Tubby has done at Minnesota and Texas Tech. He's been pretty awful.

This is how the UK coaches go. Great, good, drunk. It's proven throughout time.
Rupp-Great
Joe Hall-Good
Eddie Sutton-Drunk
Rick Pitino-Great
Tubby Smith-Good
Billy Gillispie-Drunk
John Calipari-Great

There is a definite pattern here. I don't like what comes next.

OK, that was:
1. Insightful
2. Made me chuckle.

Thanks on both.

is this for real?? Lol... You've had 2 great Coaches in Pitino and Rupp, tubby is the next best give him or Pitino the talent cal pulls in and you will the championship every couple years

I don't disagree with that. I guess where I do differ is I consider recruiting a big part of coaching. That's what makes Cal great, not his acumen on the bench. That's what makes a guy like Coach K the best overall coach in basketball. Is he a better bench coach than Tom Izzo? Maybe, maybe not. Is he a better recruiter? You better believe he is.
