Matthew Hurt Season Film Review

This year we are going to need his scoring, he has an off game of say 6 points against a good team and Duke probably isn't gonna win. I don't expect him to be a great defender, but if he fights hard that should be enough, he does do a good job of staying in good position defensively, and that's half the battle.

He should get stronger, and his strength should really help his rebounding. He's naturally a great rebounder, he just couldn't do much last year due to strength issues. I expect some 20 and 10 games out of him.

I think Hurt will be one of our leading scorers (top 3) and Duke can beat a good team with him only scoring 6 points. Next years team is really balanced and Duke has several players who can go for 20 points any given game. Wendell Moore, Matthew Hurt, DJ Steward, Jalen Johnson, Joey Baker, and Jeremy Roach all have the ability to score a lot of points. Just like every year now, we have a bunch of youth and we have to see how they mesh together. I think this team will have a toughness about them and will play well together.

Matt showed some real toughness in the FSU game, especially at the end. Hopefully, his grocery store was stocked with Wheaties and spinach. I do think we'll see a much more consistent Matt this season. I'm honestly surprised, but super excited, we will get to see year two of Matt. Bring on the Hurt young fella!

Completely agree with this assessment!

When is the last time we got a top 10 guy back? I could be wrong but i don't think Tre was top 10.

Tre was borderline top 10 based on the service you look at, ESPN he was 17, Rivals he was 11, and 247 he was #15. He was top 10 for most of his HS career though.
Chase Jeter also was borderline top 10 but I don't think he ever cracked the top 10.
Hurt is the same, he is not a CONSENSUS top 10 guy. ESPN 11, 247 12, and Rivals he was #9.

Kyle Singler was a top 10 guy based on every single service, so I think he is the answer here. Singler was a monster.

Agreed about Singler being in the rafters. Smith and Scheyer come close, but Singler was the leader on that 2010 team and a true warrior. Not sure what else he needed to do, maybe win another title or POY.

what Spanarkel's team did was so significant that the fact they fell 6 points short shouldn't diminish it. My only point was, there are two guys who deserve it in my opinion.

true and I didn't mean they weren't deserving. Just that this is Duke, and you probably need a title to have your jersey in the rafters.

Thought the analysis was good.

To keep it simple though and just my opinion, he needs to pick and choose his spots a little better (same with Wendell) on offense and think ahead on D. I don't think he needs to alter his game too much - like gain 40 lbs of muscle and add the element of driving on every 4 or 5 that guards him. I think with Hurt, just keep it simple and play his game. Every player has something to work on...don't force yourself out of your game is all I'm saying.

Personally, i just don't see Hurt developing into a 16 & 10 guy right now. And that is perfectly OK with the team we have coming in. 16 ppg is doable for him though. I hope he just shoots a thousand jumpers a day, continues to get his footwork right, get a little stronger, and learn the D. He's a threat just being on the floor on offense for a number of reasons even when he doesn't have the ball. Perfect for this system.

The 16 maybe. The 10 , no. He's just not a physical enough player right now. He has the ability to rebound though. It takes time to become efficient in the all around game. Also it's rare to see freshman and sophs to come in and be good defensive players and good free throw shooters because it's not that important in the AAU circuit and most high school basketball. That's just my opinion. OFC

Nice thing about Hurt is his perimeter game pulls a big away from the rim, which helps our O rebounding even if it isn't Hurt getting the board. If they put a smaller guy on him, Hurt can take him down low and has a mismatch on the boards.

Hurt needs to get MUCH stronger. Particularly his legs. The strength and conditioning of the bigger players has been the greatest deficiency in Duke basketball.

Players like Ryan Kelly and Shavlik Randolph talked about adding weight. You can increase strength, power and flexibility without adding 35 pounds.

Hurt needs to add weight and quickness and some lift. I know these days there are training gyms that can help with that. Unfortunately, being home bound the entire spring and part of the summer limits Hurt's ability to get that training.

It's much better for him to increase his weight by 12 pounds and get much quicker and stronger than add 35 pounds of body builder muscle and lose stamina and coordination

Players don't compare skill wise but I remember MP3 coming in very thin. By time he was a senior Marshall was a stud and a no miss 3 point shooter. OFC
