I think K really did a great job of coaching given the youth of the team. 5 freshman, 4 starting freshmen, two sophomores (one who has been injured a lot), and one Sr.

K noted that he had to switch to zone this year b/c they just couldn't learn the "team man-to-man" concepts fast enough to be effective (all the communication necessary, switching, footwork, etc.). Takes time. It's especially tough, imo, with top 10 calibre recruits largely b/c in high school, those guys are so good, and such uber athletes, they can get away with some poor habits that they can't at the college level; and generally aren't learning intricate elements of the game.

What's amazing, is that in spite of horrendous 3 point shooting, some still sketchy defense, we not only made it to the elite 8 but we went to over-time against a #1 seed and were centimeters from winning on the Grayson Allen bank shot at the end. Just not a good bounce.

How we stayed in that game, I don't know - K magic, imo.

We were out shot overall: 43.9% to 42.5%.
We were out shot from 3: 36% to 24%.
Out shot in FT %: 80% to 77.8% (but Duke had 3 more attempts and made two more).
And, out rebounded 47 to 32!

Yet, we still had a couple of really big opportunities to win (with Allen at the end, and if Duval gets the steal before their tying 3 or doesn't go for the steal and just plays man up D they may not have found that open 3 so easily).

And, when you look at Allen and Trent - they went 4 for 19 from 3 (2 for 9; 2 for 10). When your two best 3 point shooters shoot basically 20% from 3 that should be a loss. Yet, we went to OT.

If somehow Trent or Allen had just a bit of a hot streak shooting over the weekend, we win both games and they aren't nearly as close. Allen and Trent each make one more of those open 3s, we win. If one of them makes two and the other makes one, it's not nearly as close.

Disappointing loss, but, still amazing to have such poor shooting from the outside and be so out rebounded, yet still go to OT.

This is the up and down kind of trouble with so many underclassmen. Too bad we could not have coaxed Luke Kennard to have stayed one more year (or if he had not blown up so much last year). Kennard on this team with his shooting and experience? And, I think we're in the FF with a great shot at a title.

I think it was our inability to shoot the 3. This year's team didn't have our traditional "live by the 3, die by the 3" style, but when teams dive down on doubles and concentrate mostly on the post, you need to make some 3's to spread it out. Gary and Grayson both struggled to make shots the last 2 games. Combine that with struggling to rebound out of our zone, and you get a tough loss.

I think we played hard, but not particularly well. Because if we played well, we would have won. Oh well, the better team won, no sour grapes from me. The kids gave it their all.

Late in the game they had no answer for our post game but neither did we for their 3 point shot. Trading 2's for 3's was a clear disadvantage. I think Kansas played very well especially requiring a game of his life performance from Newman

I will remember our 2 (3 if you count Bolden) Bigs and the zone defense. That not even us Duke could pull off a zone defense run to the title in today's 3 point shooting era of basketball.

I agree on the shooting. Being out-rebounded doesn't jump off the page nearly as much for me as the 7-29 from three. The 22 missed threes probably explains the rebound differential anyway. With them doubling Bagley as hard as they did, someone needed to consistently make jump shots, and no one did. Yet they still almost won somehow.

Good post Youngman! I share the similar thoughts.

After sleeping on the loss last night and thinking about it this morning with a clear head it is pretty amazing we did what we did this year in general and last night specifically. There were so many "what ifs" that, had they just gone our way we would be dancing next weekend. For K to take all these young superstars and fit them into his program in such a short period of time is remarkable. We took everyone's best shot, and still we won 29 games.

I'm as disappointed as anyone that we are out of the tournament. I am not thrilled with the OAD era. But November can't get here soon enough so we can do it all again.

Let's go Duke!

maybe we should have fouled up 3 and sent them to line and played that game.........oh so close, on to next season

guys. this game was there for the taking. and the boys did - well what they did a lot during the year. didn't execute.

i think the defensive set at the last kansas possession was poor. the guys were not ready and they got a great look and nailed it.

i was pissed at grayson but this was misplaced. he recognized he didn't have his best stuff, drove to the basket got fouled -- made free throws. he also fed some critical assists to Carter.

tough loss but really we have nothing to be ashamed of, we played hard and it was a great game.
