Is there any realistic chance he leaves to take the Ga Tech head coaching job? I know they have stated he is their #1 target and I've read they are close to offering him the job.

My question...would he really leave to take it with the chances of him being the next HC here such a good probability?

I said this in another thread but why not Duke up his title to HC in waiting? It would be a show of good faith. Even then things can change but atleast it's a start in displaying some type of commitment to Jeff. Now me personally, I don't think you just hand Jeff the job at Duke as their could be a better candidate out there. I say all of that nonsense to say this: it's real easy for us to sit here and say "Jeff should just stay at Duke because he's going to get STRONG consideration to replace K. But the fact of the matter is if he is being offered a lot of money at a school like GT that has a good history then it may be difficult to turn that down because of possibilities? Especially since it could be 5 years away from that. Not easy as far as I'm concerned.

Although I think that Capel is on a path to one day being named the next Duke Head Coach, I don't think Duke wants to lock him into that position quite yet....I am sure Duke wants to find someone who can lead our program for 10-20 years....I am not saying Capel isn't that guy, but we are limiting our options if we name him HCiW.

Money or not, I really don't see Capel leaving Duke at this time, especially for a HC position at another ACC school. No basis for my thought, just my opinion.
Go Duke!!

Georgia Tech's history isn't as strong as some make it out to be. In the last 20 years they've had a winning conference record exactly one time. That was in 2004 when they went 9-7 in league play with Chris Bosh and Jarrett Jack....they also backed into the national championship game and lost to UConn.

Besides, let's say the head coaching gig at GT was a good job....is it really better than being the head assistant at Duke, the lead recruiter and right-hand man to a guy named Krzyzewski? IMO, it's not even close what the better job would be....but I don't know about you.

What's the money situation? A factor, always.

I agree I think being the head assistant at Duke next to K is better. I don't disagree with anything you said. At the same time, I'm not Jeff and I can't discount the factors I mentioned in my attempts to lol at this objectively.

I like the Vandy move. Can't hurt him even if Vandy remains mediocre, and he could make them better, which is all the better for his resume. However, if he takes the Stony Brook job instead, I'll have a barbecue for him and his family and the team at my place. What could be a better incentive?:)

Chris Bosh was a top 5 pick the year before their final 4 run and they did blowout UConn earlier in the year. But Georgia Tech is 8th all time in landing McDonald All Americans and they have had more Freshman of the Years than any team in the ACC with 11....they have been extremely underachieving given their talent especially under Hewitt.

Good catch. My bad. Was that BJ Elder and the kid who went to Arizona....Bynum or something on that team? Who was the big redhead? Schencher or something?

Wasnt it Luke Senshaw or something? Jarret Jack was on that team too if I'm not mistaken

Unless the admissions standards changed ala Stanford, Capel's ability to recruit could make tech relevant in a hurry. Hope he stays. Him staying and taking over is the best way to maintain a high level when K leaves in that it is the best chance for players not leaving and recruits not backing out/choosing Duke in the first place thinking K might be leaving.

Yep. Will Bynum, Elder, Jack, Marvin Lewis, Luke Schenscher, Anthony McHenry and Clarence Moore were the main players on that team.

Didn't we sweep GT that year??? And would have had to beat them a 3rd time in the championship, if not for the refs ending our season.

Capel would make GT relevant quickly, given all the talent in Atlanta. However, I don't see him moving to an ACC school.

Also...maybe Capel is considering a job because he knows K isnt anywhere close to retiring???? Maybe he doesn't want to wait another 8 years??????

I believe Ga Tech won in Durham that year and Duke won in Atlanta.

I just looked up that ACC tournament --- the older I get the harder it is to distinguish years --- and realized that was the year Maryland won it as the sixth seed and beat the #3, #2 and #1 seeds over three consecutive days.

Didn't we blow like a 10-12 point lead in the final six to eight minutes of that game? For some reason that sounds familiar.

I thought I would see if I could get some opinions on this remark Kelly Quinlan with Rivals made in an update he did concerning the GT coaching search. You can see more here: https://georgiatech.n.rivals.com/news/q-s-take-on-the-basketball-search

Specifically I'd like to know opinions on this comment: "Those issues along with the long unspoken and true ban of Krzyzewski former assistants coaching in the ACC make him a long shot at best."

Some people think this comment is bunk, personally I understand why a coach would not want to coach against former assistants regularly. But I don't think a strict ban has been in place. I guess you guys would have the best insights into this topic. Thanks for any opinions.

That was 04.... Maryland came all the way back to win the ACC tourney in OT that year... John Gilchist killed us that game!

Chad Lykins just retweeted a tweet that stated GT hired Bryce Drew according to insiders... Hopefully that's true! Now I hope Vandy hires someone other then Capel and he stays!

I'm really not a "refs screwed us" guy, but Duke was hosed in the 04 FF game. Also if Deng didn't heave a shot so early in the clock, they still might have hung on. I still feel that 2004 team was a title winner.....

At first both Tech and Vandy were after Capel. The I read that they were both after Drew. Perhaps Capel told both of them "Thanks but no thanks."

in 04 we had a 12 pt lead and the ball w/about 4 minutes left. Just as I was thinking, 1, holy crap, we are going to upset UConn and 2, just take our time and get a really good shot, Ewing I think lets fly a 3 very early in the shot clock, UConn gets a runnout and UConn hits a 3 in transition. Refs still hosed us, especially fouling out Randolph.

Jeff Capel removed his name from the Georgia Tech coaching job according to CBS sports so that's great news!

Schenscher!
I remember when Zoubek committed thinking maybe he could have a trajectory like Schenscher, and he sort of did, team wise.
