Starting a new thread since I did not want to keep feeding an outdated one...

Looks like Coach D. has effectively gone back to the well and landed another St. Anthony's stud.

Today, Ty Xanders broke the news that the top-ranked face-off man/#14 overall prospect, Jake Naso, has flipped his verbal from UVA to the Blue Devils.

The addition of Naso now makes it three Friars (#1 Brennan O'Neill; #36 Aidan Danenza; and now the aforementioned Naso) that will be Durham bound in the fall of 2020.

Naso is the sixth top-50 recruit from the Inside Lax's top-100 seniors list to commit to Duke
-#1 Brennan O'Neill (Attack)
-#14 Jake Naso (Face-off)
-#22 Cole Krauss (Defense)
-#33 Charlie O'Connor (Midfielder)
-#36 Aidan Danenza (Midfielder)
-#41 Ryan MacKenzie (Midfielder)

Including Naso, DU also now has five members of the USA U19 World Team Training Roster:
-Jake Caputo (2019; Middie)
-Connor Drake (2019; Middie)
-Jake Naso (2020; FO)
-Brennan O'Neill (2020; Attack)
-Cole Krauss (2020; Defense)

Coach Caputo deserves a lot of love too...

His son [Jake] played with Team 91 and he has really been working that pipeline!!!

I sincerely consider the Devils the favorites to land McAdorey (#1 2021) and Spallina (#1 2022).

Make that 5 top-30 prospects in the 2021 class...

After Coach D. flips Xavier Arline (#5 2020) from UNC and gets verbals from the Schwarz brothers (#11 Tyler, #13 Johnny), I am going to start calling us "91 Blue Devils" because of the heavy Team 91 influence.

If I am Cutcliffe and Danowski, I get in the game ASAP...

The kid is a freak athlete and even if he does not translate into a QB in the ACC, he will still be of use in some way. He has explosive speed!

On the lax field, he is another product of Team 91 and would add further continuity to what is shaping up to be an unstoppable offense in the coming years.

When watching lacrosse, my first thought is how many players are on the sidelines. What is the maximum number of scholarships allowed? Do they use partial scholarships like baseball? Do the walk-ons get preferred treatment for admissions?

If fully endowed (which Duke is), they are permitted an allotment of 12.6 scholarships...

Given that the roster size on the 2020 roster is 49 (with many being 4 and 5-star recruits), I think there definitely has to be a lot of partial rides being awarded.

This could have changed, but as of 2016, there was no limit to how many student-athletes were allowed to suit up for games.

As far as special treatment for preferred walk-ons, I cannot answer that because I have never been in that situation...I will say that a preferred WO at Duke is probably scholarship caliber at the majority of DI institutions. Therefore, it would not surprise me if there is a little bit of leeway granted...But that is opinion more than fact.

Thanks for the information. I suppose that the Ivy League can't offer athletic grants? I know Princeton and Yale are usually good

Correct on the suit up limits. But Duke uses a reduced travel roster - this probably part budget oriented but it also serves as a competition incentive for guys fighting for PT.

Looks like O'Neill and Naso moved closer to making the final roster for the U19 World Championships in July.

Leading the U19 Training roster to a 2-0 record last weekend at the Premiere Lacrosse showcase in San Antonio, O'Neill (St. Anthony's) recorded a four-goal, 1 assist performance on Saturday in a 17-3 win over Team Premiere and then followed it up with a 3-goal, 1-helper effort versus Team Japan (15-2 triumph) yesterday...His nine total points were tops among all scorers for the Red, White, and Blue.

Handling face-off duties was the other St. Anthony's senior/Duke 2020 recruit, Naso, who concluded the weekend with an unofficial FO winning percentage of 78% (14-for-18), including a perfect 9-for-9 versus Japan.

I did not hear Cole Krauss's name called in particular, but the defense was dominant in both games, allowing an average of just 2.5/game. Therefore, I assume he played well.

Jake Caputo was out with injury.

Season opener tomorrow boys! Can't wait to see how this squad comes out of the gate against Air Force. 2pm EST on the ACC Network Extra.

Hopefully Robertson's knee injury doesn't keep him out too long, but excited to see how Dyson Williams responds if thrust into action.

March to Championship weekend starts tomorrow!

Nowhere to go but up after that quite humbling performance yesterday...

There were some definite bright spots (Manown 5-point game, Badour 4-point game, Caputo 4-point game, Carpenter 4-point game, Stein/Ginder combined 21-for-30 on face-offs), but we did not look sharp.

In the big picture, not really a big deal; we have had slow starts in the past and recovered strong.

The inexperienced guys on "D" just need some reps with each other to tighten up.

Leadmon was kind of driving me crazy with his drives to the goal where it was obvious he was not going to pass. The no-show by Nakeie obviously didn't help things.

Agreed with @Hofman19 though. Duke has routinely taken an early season loss in some of its most dominant years. Should be interesting to see how we respond on Saturday at High Point.

Robertson out for the year :-(

Certainly not the news you want to wake up to on Monday...

I guess the silver lining long term is that he will qualify for a 5th year of eligibility and will make an already insane 2022 offense even more unstoppable.

Man, what a gut punch. Time for one of the young guns to step up this season.

Too soon to start a 2021 thread, so I figured I'd just put this little nugget here...

Rumors are circulating that the Blue Devils are the favorites to land the hottest "free agent" on the market in 2020 National Player of the Year, Michael Sowers (formerly of Princeton).

A four-time USILA All-American (3rd team as freshman, 2nd team as a sophomore, 1st team the past two seasons), Sowers was a Tewaaraton finalist in 2019 and appeared well on his way to being a runaway winner in 2020 (was averaging 9.4 points per game) had the season not been suspended/canceled.

The all-time leading scorer in Princeton history, he posted totals of 82 (41G, 41A), 83 (27G, 56A), and 90 (37G, 53A) points in his three full seasons representing the Tigers. This year, he racked up 16 goals and 31 assists in only five appearances.

Just the thought of the addition of Sowers, along with #1 overall 2020 recruit, Brennan O'Neill, to an attackmen cohort that already boasts Joe Robertson, Dyson Williams, JP Basile, Joey Manown, and CJ Carpenter, should keep opposing D-Coordinators up at night.

In unrelated news, please wish former four-year starting goalie/2x All-ACC 1st teamer, Danny Fowler, the very best of luck as he embarks on a very exciting new challenge.

Fowler recently completed U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School (OCS) and will begin BUD/S training in a little less than a week.

As a senior, #3 helped Duke reach the NCAA National title game in 2018.

Cannot wait for the 2021 squad to take the field. Any word on Giles-Harris coming back?

Mixed feelings on this...

On the one hand, Bonafede is one of my Flyer brethren and with some reps, I think he could/would turn into a very solid goalie for the Devils.

Plus, I am not sure we want to upset the future brother-in-law of Danny "Dimes" Jones :)

The flip side is that in the short-term, Adler, might be the final piece to the super team we have built for 2021...He possesses the consistency that we will need to hoist hardware.

Gives New Meaning to the "BROTHERHOOD" !!!

I wrote this on Facebook last night when the news was reported:

"Congratulations to my friends, the Fowler family, on the announcement that the last of the bunch, Vincent, will be following in the lineage of excellence set forth by his siblings, by choosing to play for legendary coach, John Danowski, at Duke University!!!

The fourth Fowler brother to make the decision to matriculate and chase his academic and/or athletic dreams in Durham, the Wantagh native is now officially a part of a tradition that has known nothing but success and glory!!!

Brendan (2010-2014), the oldest of the brood, was a face-off specialist extraordinaire who lead the Blue Devils to back-to-back NCAA National Crowns in 2013 and 2014....Winning 20 of 28 draws, he was named as the Most Outstanding Player of the 2013 title game. This was the perfect culmination of a junior campaign that also witnessed him garner 1st Team All-American honors and receive the ACC Defensive Player of the Year award...As a senior, he again achieved AA status, making the 3rd Team...Per the NCAA DI Lax record book, he currently ranks 8th all-time in both career FO won (816) and ground balls collected (474).

Danny (2014-2018), who was part of the 2014 championship team while redshirting as a true freshman, emerged as a permanent fixture in cage for Duke from 2015-2018...A four-year starter for the Blue & White, he compiled a career record of 44-21 while amassing 624 career saves (2nd in school history)...Named to the All-ACC squad in both his junior and senior years, Dan is the only Duke goalie to receive this accolade multiple-times...In 2017, he was an Honorable Mention All-American selection....His individual success would also yield immense team triumph as DU advanced to the conference title game in 2015 and 2016. In 2018, he helped deliver the squad back to Championship weekend, as the Devils finished the year as the National runners-up.

Jack (2015-2019) saw action in all four years of his tenure as a Dukie, but really broke out as a contributor in his last season in Durham...Starting all 18 games as a LSM/close defender in 2019, he was an invaluable component to a D-unit that ranked 7th nationally...Like those that came before him, he too enjoyed the magical experience of participating in the final-4, as the school advanced to the national semifinals before losing an heartbreaker to the eventual titlists (Virginia).

In true Fowler style, Vincent (identical to his big bros) is a bit of a athletic renaissance man!!! In addition to shining with the pole on Chaminade's perennially nationally ranked lacrosse team, he also was a major asset on defense on the gridiron, collecting 41 tackles in helping the Flyers to the 2019 NYCHSFL "AA-1" title.

Having already secured commitments from the #1, #2, #10, #17, #29, and #59 overall 2021 recruits in the nation (per Inside Lacrosse), Fowler is the newest member of one of the most stacked classes in the country...

Combined with the strength of the 2019 and 2020 classes, it is almost a certainty that the Blue Devils will be in the natty conversation all 4/5 years of his collegiate career!"
