I was in New Haven, Connecticut last weekend for the National Prep Showcase...Jon Scheyer and Nolan Smith were in on Saturday morning (along with John Calipari and Orlando Antigua) watching Brewster Academy play. After the game, I got a chance to speak with Matas Buzelis
“The fact their head coach is talking with me, and showed up to watch me play, shows me how much they really care," Buzelis said. "I am trying to figure out visits, and everything with my family, but the fact they’re here shows how talented I am, but I still have a lot of work to do.”
When asked about Duke specifically, Buzelis went on to say, "I am trying to set up an official visit with them, maybe in December."
“I am looking for a program, with a coach I can lean on," Buzelis said when asked about what he will be looking for in a program. "This decision, this choice is bigger than basketball for me; so just having that connection is very important.”
Buzelis Scouting Report
Buzelis checks all the boxes when it comes to size, fluidity, ball skills, and touch. While he will need to continue getting stronger, he is a lengthy wing/forward prospect and has nice pop and athleticism to his game. He will need some time to figure out his game, as he refers to himself exclusively as a big guard. He is turnover prone off the bounce and while he can shoot the 3, it does not go in at an efficient rate. The Dunleavy and Singler comparisons are not very apt yet as he will need to tighten some things up to get to that level. There is clear upside with the No. 27 ranked prospect.
In this game, Brewster lost to Fork Union Military. Buzelis finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 0 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks in 28 minutes. He was 5-11 FG, 1-6 3P, and added 4 turnovers.
