Aiming for Final Fours, Avery Johnson calls Duke the model for Alabama program

In terms of expectations, Avery Johnson isn't hedging.

Introduced as Alabama's next basketball coach Wednesday, the former NBA player went straight to the top when discussing the model program.

"Duke University, that's the standard for us here at the University of Alabama and our basketball program," Johnson said. "The way they play defense and offense. The way they move the ball, that's the standard. Nobody else is the standard. That's the standard. Duke University. That's why I'm here."

The Blue Devils were busy winning their fifth national title when Johnson was officially announced as Alabama's coach Monday night. The plan, Johnson said, was to join the elite in the final weekend of a season coming up

The style of play Johnson favors is the one Duke runs.

"That's the NBA system," Johnson said. "Coach K has kind of recreated and retransformed himself, now it's his great coaching adapted to the type of student-athlete playing now and his experience with our national team.
