Cunningham said Complete carolina will be funded completely by the Ram's Club. He added that unc averages about a 90-percent graduation rate among student-athletes.

"There's a commitment on the faculty's part to ensure that all of the students who have attended carolina have the opportunity to complete their degree and be leaders in their community,"Dr. Cairns said.

"I think it's the right thing to do," Dr. Cairns said. "It always starts with that. If that helps that ongoing conversation, then that's great. carolina has always led.

I wonder why this program is coming about now.
If it's such a good idea why did it take so long.....
Why is it funded by the rams club
Is this hush money for disgruntled ex athletes?
Is this to keep a lawsuit from coming up by ex athletes claiming exploitation for their athletic abilities?
And lastly, is the degree field limited to AFAM?

Complete carolina an incomplete solution

unc Chapel Hill's announcement Thursday that it is formally instituting a program to support former athletes who want to return to the university finish their degrees may be well-intentioned, but misses the mark.

"Complete carolina" will help student-athletes who left in good academic standing by offering access to financial support to help with tuition, books, fees, and room and board, that would be in line with their scholarships. unc already has a pretty good track record of having athletes receive their degrees.

We fully support unc in its mission to encourage not just athletes, but all students, to complete their degrees.

Complete carolina again emphasizes athletics over academics, and goes further by creating a perk other students cannot access. Student-athletes often choose to leave, but the key word is "choose." While we are delighted that the university is encouraging these students to return, there needs to be careful consideration of the message it sends and the questions it raises.

How does this program translate for the non-athletic members of the student body? Do they view it as athletes getting special treatment for which more coordination-challenged members of the student body are not eligible? And is there any concern about providing this support for athletes but not for the students who are there just to focus on academics? If a student with a partial academic scholarship, for example, leaves because his or her parents can no longer afford to cover the rest of the college costs, would that student find available similar support if he or she were able to return to the university later? How can the cost of the program be justified in the current economic climate?

Athletes should not be entitled to special treatment. They sign on with full knowledge that classwork is going to be competing with time in the gym and time on the field or the court. Part of the college experience is learning how to juggle multiple responsibilities. Those run the gamut from students working full-time jobs to pay for school to students with very full social calendars to students involved in activities like marching band. All are time-consuming, worthwhile activities that add to the college experience.

And while Complete carolina will help encourage former players to finish their degrees, perhaps, it does little to recalibrate the equation between academics and athletics. The friction between the two will remain until we acknowledge that some athletes are there to play and help generate money for universities or until we truly place academics ahead of athletics.

I recall you have stated that Art Chansky, in one of his books, said that Dean Smith was responsible for the creation of the AFAM Department. Have you written that or am I reading too much of this stuff and am finally unable to keep it all straight? If Art did write that, in what book? Thanks.

BL:

Yes, Dean was instrumental in starting unc's AfAm Dept in the late 70s-early 80s. That is a pretty well-known fact. Nothing sinister about it.

Art has authored 4-5 Dean Books. I'm sure the AfAm stuff is in all of them.

Re: UNC Scandal: Manalishi speaks(Pg 27)

Gpack86, let's try to clarify about the Hugh McColl thing. First of all, the article says it was a secret campaign to raise money for 2 years. I somehow feel like they're laughing and throwing gasoline on a fire. Kenneth Wainstsein was only hired in February of this year. Can they not ever find someone who isn't financially connected to UNC Chapel Hill? Wainstein even broke protocol and gave the NCBOG an update where he reassured everyone his work was "independent". Remember when Holden Thorp created an "independent" panel who were called outsiders where every member of that panel was directly connected to UNC Chapel Hill? What about Jim Martin being called an "independent" inquiry? Hugh McColl's former employer Bank of America's biggest stockholder is a former UNC system president whose daughter sits on the Knight Foundation. There's a direct connection to the NCAA.

How much money did Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft donate to Charlotte's arts/cultural society? Compare that with the final cost of Kenneth Wainstein's inquiry and you might just see UNC actually considering their money spent to be a contribution to the arts of Charlotte, NC. Of course, their PR firm will spin as if they spent a fortune on getting to the bottom of what was going on in the art's & sciences department.

unx committs one of the worst , if not THE worst , athletic/academic scandal in NCAA history yet so many of their fans wanna focus on those who dare to comment on it. Amusing , to say the least. One would think they'd be humiliated and angry at those who perpetuated the fraud instead. One would think anyway. That said , for those of ya who haven't read "Tarnished Heels" here's a list of the "essential and unanswered questions" posed at the end of each chapter...

Compiled below is a list of 133 questions that remain unanswered. Taken from the ends of the chapters in Tarnished Heels, the questions span athletics, academics, and the many points where the two topics often overlapped at unc. While not necessarily a road map, the list might serve as fodder for further thought by those interested in a story that continues to unfold. The book goes into much greater detail, providing specific dates, documents, and timelines that lead to the necessary asking of each and every essential question. Sadly, it is a tale of broken ethics, but demands the attention of any honorable and responsible adult who is concerned about our nation's educational future....

An ex-guv , that is , with his name on a schollie at unx and long-time professional and personal ties to the Pope family. A unx alum attorney general dismisses criminal charges and defers to a similar private proceeding...at HIS alma mater. Jan Boxill changes wording ( thus changing the context ) of press releases to prevent the NCAA from returning to unx. Iceberg Mouthguards is formed by shady alums and starts giving impermissible benefits to unx basketball players. Agents teach classes at unx. Agent/runners coach football teams. A freakin' WOMEN'S SOFTBALL PLAYER acted as a runner , the vaunted "carolina way" is proven to be nuthin' more than a big-azz lie , Dean was instrumental in the formation of the AFAM department so he's part of the scam too......and there's more. unc parts ways with three scholarship players, another's status in doubt

Senior defensive tackle Shawn Underwood, redshirt freshman defensive tackle Greg Webb and sophomore linebacker Clint Heaven are no longer on the North carolina football team, a team spokesman said on Wednesday.

All three players were on scholarship, and Underwood was listed on the Tar Heels' preseason depth chart as a possible starter at defensive tackle. The status of another scholarship player, sophomore offensive guard J.J. Patterson, is unclear, said Kevin Best, the unc football spokesman.

Patterson will not be among the 105 players who practice with the team on Friday when unc beings preseason camp. The loss of Underwood and Webb, meanwhile, leaves Ethan Farmer, a senior, as the only remaining player who ended the spring on the depth chart at defensive tackle.

Had he remained a part of the team, Underwood would have entered the preseason competing with Farmer for a starting position. Among unc's personnel losses, the departure of Underwood is the most significant. He appeared in nine games last season, and in 11 games in 2012, when he started five times at defensive tackle.

Underwood was among the most experienced players on the Tar Heels' defensive line, which already is tasked with replacing two starters - Kareem Martin and Tim Jackson - from last season.

Citing student privacy laws, Best said he couldn't say why Underwood and Webb are no longer on the team. Heaven, who as a freshman played in five games last season, is transferring to Northern Iowa, Best said.

unc wants Willingham case moved to federal court

The University of North carolina Wednesday asked to have a civil suit filed by a former academic adviser heard in federal court rather than at the county level.

Mary Willingham, who claims that the university put player eligibility above academic integrity for years, filed the suit in Wake County, alleging that unc retaliated against her for speaking about the academic performance of revenue-sport athletes.

unc asked North carolina's Eastern District of Federal Court to take up the case because Willingham's claims of retaliation are based on federal, not state, law.

Willingham claims she was informed in July 2013 that there would be several changes regarding the terms of her employment with the university, including a demoted rank and title and additional job duties that would require "extensive training."

Willingham's claims of retaliation also stated that she was told by the university that she would no longer be advising undergraduate students, but would only provide academic advising to graduate students who were seniors. Willingham was also forced to move her existing office to another space with working conditions her suit describes as "poor."

"Defendants (unc) retaliated against Plantiff (Willingham) by providing her with a hostile work environment and purposefully failing or refusing to take prompt and effective remedial action to eradicate Plantiff's hostile work environment," the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit claimed that Willingham has "incurred and sustained harms, losses and other damages" as a "direct and proximate result of unc's acts of reprisal" against her. Willingham, who resigned her position at the end of the 2014 spring semester, is seeking damages in excess of $10,000 and court costs.

thanks.

Man, I hope this NCAA mess does not boomerang and prevent us from playing by the same rules as our competitors. I was hoping for a little lip service to the pin heads for a year or 2 and then back to the same standards that everyone else plays by. I hope our administration does not lose its nerve and cave into the N&O and crack ride. Those are the last folks whose approval we should seek.

From: John Shelton Reed,

Dear Mr. Curran,

I have been concerned about the university's handling of our several
embarrassments at the hands of the athletic department The damage to our
reputation has been great, possibly irreparable, yet we have not even begun to
repair it. Our problems were aptly described last week on a Texas A&M faculty
listserv by an Aggie professor who wrote that "unc sports is a sad tale of the tail
wagging the dog, which then scratches itself in [sic] self-inflicted wounds." Your
South Building colleagues need some professional guidance and I hope that hiring
you is a sign that they realize it...

'carolina Way' needs direction

A former North carolina player was caught with marijuana at a house owned by Roy Williams in December, but the Hall of Fame coach never had to answer a single question about it.

Chances are, it might have come up at least once if Mike Krzyzewski or John Calipari was involved in a similar situation. But that just shows you how much Williams had been dealing with last season.

His top player didn't play a minute after accepting thousands of dollars in improper benefits. His only scholarship senior was suspended for nine games for making similar mistakes. A unc reading specialist said that one of Williams' former players was illiterate.

And besides, there was the up-and-down performance of the team, which balanced massive upsets with dumbfounding losses, won 10 straight games in the ACC and then went 1-2 in the postseason.

It all added up to what Williams said was the toughest year he'd ever had as a coach ? and that was before someone actually pointed the finger at him for having direct knowledge of any misconduct.

That didn't happen until this summer, when former player Rashad McCants said that he benefited from rampant fraud in unc's Department of African and Afro-American Studies, and that McCants was "100 percent" sure that Williams knew about the phony system.

Williams strongly denied knowing anything, and without any corroborating evidence it turns into an issue of one person's word against the other. That doesn't bode well for McCants, though his claim that he got straight A's in four "no-show" AFAM independent studies classes during the 2005 championship season is backed up by his transcript.

What is the head coach's culpability for any of this? Should he have known that two of his starters were palling around with a felon in Durham during their careers? The basketball office checks to make sure players go to class ? should Williams have wondered why McCants never had to attend one?

Remember, football coach Butch Davis wasn't fired because the NCAA accused him of wrongdoing. Instead, Davis was dismissed because his associate head coach was accepting money from an agent, his top players were getting free flights, other players received illegitimate academic help from his son's tutor ? and in the end, it didn't even matter if Davis did anything wrong. Ignorance was not a good-enough excuse.

So what should Williams have known?

No basketball player committed a violent crime while at unc or made the campus less safe because of his presence. Part of Leslie McDonald's suspension last year came because he slept on Johnny Tillett's couch in Nags Head after working as a counselor at Tillett's basketball camp. In no other world except the NCAA's is that seen as a punishable offense.

But at a school like North carolina, where the men's basketball program is the most visible part of the university, there comes a time when too many negative headlines becomes damaging enough no matter how serious the charges are.

So what should be done? Some are suggesting that unc take down the 2005 national championship banner, or that the NCAA should hand down penalties to future teams.

But taking down a piece of cloth and vacating wins is pointless. There's no taking back the celebrations or the memories. And there's no sense in putting a postseason ban on the players from the 2015-16 team who were in elementary school when McCants played here.

Thanks to some extraordinary digging by N.C. State fans and some astounding FERPA-breaking stupidity by unc employees, a transcript from former Tar Heels football star Julius Peppers was unearthed that certainly makes it seem like the AFAM department was used by athletes to bolster their GPAs since before 2000.

By all means, unc should find out what violations were committed, about who knew what and when. But the AFAM department has been cleaned up. The chancellor, the provost, the athletics director, the AFAM department's chairman, the head of compliance ? they're all gone.

The right move now is to look forward. The school should take the lead on improving the lives of its athletes, unilaterally if it can, while pressuring other schools to follow suit. "Complete carolina," a program that allows some former athletes to complete their degrees, was a good start. Next, offer guaranteed four-year scholarships and future health care for injuries. Make sure an athletics scholarship is as good as the best academic one. Reduce the number of hours that students must spend on their sports.

You no longer hear unc officials say "The carolina Way" because it no longer means what it once did. If the school has the guts to make some changes, it could mean something once again.

This started out like the writer was serious about the rules violations of UNC, but as I read further along it seemed to me he was advocating a 'let bygones be bygones' approach and punishment wouldn't be fair since most involved are
not there anymore. That is not a deterrent, and it's not fair to the schools and players that have been punished.

And then this little tidbit: 'The school should take the lead on improving the lives of its athletes, unilaterally if it can, while pressuring other schools to follow suit.' Taking a shot at other schools (who couldn't be doing a good job, because Carolina hasn't) while tooting their own horn again (UNC leads the way...others follow). What a load IMO.

I read it that way too. He was saying , basically , let the bank robber keep the money as long as he promises not to keep stealing. Removing wins , banners , probation and post-season bans are how this kinda thing is punished. Otherwise , why have any rules at all? Harold's a tarhole homer and it probably killed 'im to concede as much as he did. And unx is in no position whatsoever to "pressure" anyone into doing anything. Typical arrogant unx mindset though. "Do I still 'like' Mary"? ? Answer: Sure.

"Can I trust Mary now?" ? Answer: As much as I ever did, which is not meant to be ambiguous.

"Do I think Mary's original concerns still have merit?" ? Answer: Absolutely. The kids she was tutoring were semi-literate. The fact that the average unc fan didn't care (and still don't), didn't mean Mary didn't care.

All the Roy Boys who haven't made their transcripts public are now joined by all the Mary-haters on the unc Faculty who won't submit their thesises to the same microscope Mary went under.

Despites hundreds of footnotes and accreditations, Mary apparently did not credit every single source so today the unc BCS-Before-I-Die Society and Franklin Street Ostrichs are whoopin' and high-fivin'. Such is the frighteningly grim reality of the quite dangerous high-wire act of "whistleblowing".

I am appalled that any college student would bend the rules on a paper. Shock and awe! And by the way, uncers may not know where all the semi-illiterates are but they sure know where McCants is.

I still think Roy's days are numbered and one banner is coming down.

I do like to poke fun at the Heels, but I have a certain amount of respect for their program. That respect is diminishing very quickly.
The attack on Mary Willingham is vicious, and the hate they have for her is nauseating. Shooting the messenger is not enough for them...they've resorted to a scorching the ground policy in order to protect the corruptness of their athletic program. And if I wasn't sure that they have much more to hide, then I certainly do now. Their tactics prove 'they are who we thought they were'.

Mary's thesis may have instances of suspect passages, but it does include 60 citations, and a bibliography of 30+ sources. Sloppiness, unintentional lapses...sure, but strictly to the rule of definition of plagiarism (taking someone's work and passing it off as one's own), I don't think so. Not intentionally anyway. Plagiarism is in the 'eye of the beholder', and different universities have their own 'code' of what it involves.
In this case, (Eye of the Beholder---The Twilight Zone) the UNC supporters (The Pig People) think that McAdoo's paper was a thing of beauty, but poor Mary's...not so much.

And the single most important thing I gather from the case of Mary's 'plagiarism' vs the sordid affair of the Carolina Way is that Mary Willingham didn't duck, hide, try to cover-up, or shovel manure over her 'mistake'. She even linked the newspaper article about the plagiarism charge on her website. Now...who would you believe is more trustworthy, Mary, or an institution (and fans) that have abused it's power and did everything possible to smear this woman, and to cover-up the stench of the Carolina Way? Even without knowing one more tidbit of info...I know who I trust more...and hopefully, there will be many others like me.

Exactly. ^^^^ "Intent" matters and her mistakes , while sloppy , do not rise to the level of plagiarism. Kinda funny watchin' hole fans too stupid to gain admittance to unx opine on the nuances of "plagiarism."

Her minor mistakes don't rise to the level of copying an oft-recycled paper , putting one's name on it then handing it in for credit towards academic/athletic eligibility. Anyone else would be ashamed of themselves. Not unx. #carolinaway Found this exchange on Twitter unx alum Bob Lee...

@BobLeeSays Great rivalry. Which is why it's tough 4 me to see the current unc custodians not facing this issue squarely & taking ownership.

@RAnneShirley : Humility 101 has never been offered in a unc course catalogue. The carolina Way is not going quietly into any good night.

Renee Anne Shirley ‏@RAnneShirley

@BobLeeSays The irony is that by allowing this to fester more threads r going to unravel going back to the Dean Smith era & sullying image. I know many proud unc alums who are appalled at the way this is being handled. Lost in all of saga are the student-aths' lives.

Here's a brief exchange I had with Dr. Ridpath...
