Lack of Institutional Control in Chapel Hill

While they'll never be able to prove with hard evidence that Ol' Roy and other basketball officials knew about it and funneled players into that dept. (and likely encouraged the AFAM employees to keep it going), it's quite clear to anyone with half a brain that they were involved for at least a few years in the middle of all the cheating.

Their not gonna get the death penalty, but I imagine they'll get dinged pretty hard for claiming ignorance in the face of such widespread fraud. We'll know in March or April 2016.

How embarrassing. UNC fans should be ashamed of the school, coaches, and players. Roy needs to step down and the Athletic Dept. needs to be gutted. Folt should resign....actually, they just need to clean house from top to bottom.

Side note: UNC apparel will likely go on sale and be cheaper than toilet paper. Stock up to wipe your poo. Or u could just find a UNC diploma and use it. It's as useful as toilet paper at this point.

In other words, after the basketball tourney is over and they might have won another nc. Why not in Dec or Jan?? Also ,many on other sites want Swofford gone since he was there when it was going on, not to mention they just don't like him in general . I agree with them 100%. Why did we get a commish that had any connection with any acc school? Especially tar hole tech.

The UNC statement shows how desperate they are to hedge and to frame the story. At no point ever have they truly owned up fully. It is like someone robbed a bank, later got caught, and then claimed they see the error of their ways and they want to reform and start a program for other potential criminals. All that is well and good, but you've still got to pay for the bank you did rob. Folt and company seem to think that fixing the problem is enough penitence. Not hardly. You have to take responsibilty and pay for what you did.

Funny that they tried soooo hard to fire everybody that could be connected to what's happening right now. I actually enjoy CAROLINA losing, but I'm really not enjoying this now. It's gone from funny to sad and it actually just adds another black eye to the ACC. Our Rivalry has always been awesome, I don't care what anybody says, it simply will no longer be the same. UNC is no longer elite.

list of expectations for underprepared student-athletes.

More from B-Rad. His "outline of standards for underprepared students." Among other things , "knows where to park legally." Credit hours for that? Lol...

In the beginning, I hoped that UNC hadn't done what they were accused of. I thought it tarnished the conference and the rivalry. I've always said my disdain for their program begins and ends on the court. However, given their attitude about the allegations (general head in the sand combined with "everybody does it", while trying to maintain their holy than thou mentality) and just how deep the corruption was, I hope they get the Death Penalty. They deserve it.

Should be but most of the ones I know are not. They really think nothing wrong has been done. OFC

The NCAA will want to give HOF Coach Roy Williams a chance to win a legit NC. If not this coming year he probably will not have another good shot at it. Got to be embarrassing. And as far as Swofford goes he'll probably get a contract extension and a big raise. OFC

With the looming sanctions and lack of committed recruits, next year is UNC's last chance for a loooooooooonnngggg time to make any noise in the tournament.

The sad thing is, Roy will not take responsibility as he should. When the problem listed is "Lack of Institutional Control" - that speaks directly to the head coach. The head coach is THE most powerful and prominent person. This is especially true in basketball. The HC IS the institution. Everything runs through him. If this happened at Duke, there would be one target from the media and fans; one face and one name everyone would look to: K.

But, Roy will not take full responsibility. It's not like one player went rogue. The whole system was bad.

Personally, I think the NCAA should take away the titles. And get a new, solid coach in there - someone with good UNC pedigree but also someone who will restore quality to the program with greater integrity.

If they don't take away the titles, if all they do is, say, limit some scholarships, that won't really be much of a penalty, imo (especially in CBB - half the time Duke is 2-3-4 scholarships below the limit - as last year and they won a title!).

Removal of 3 championship banners, vacating all wins for 18 years, tarnishing legacy of every unc bball coach including dean smith, firing of roy williams, death penalty for program, and to top it all the dropping of unc's ranking on us news to bottom of public universities (currently 5 to 117-currently held by UNC-Charlotte lol)

following the rules...takes away time that athletes have to focus on sports...the entire success of unc's bball program since the 1990s has been due to the huge competitive advantage gained from taking away all classroom responsibilities (multiple successful seasons/championships leads to better recruits leading to more championships, etc)

I assume the lack of institutional control can be compared to the lack of ball control by their guards?

I hope I hit the like button for this post. When I looked again , the unlike sign was showing.. I would like to see this happen but, won't hold my breath. Has there ever , in history of the NCAA, been a case running as long as this one?? Programs have been hit hard by a lot less.

"Everyone who loves Carolina is truly saddened by these allegations," Hall of Fame basketball coach Roy Williams said in a statement. "We aspire to and work toward meeting higher standards than the actions that warranted this notice. Our university and numerous outside groups have looked at every aspect of our academic and athletic life. As a result, Carolina has implemented scores of new processes and checks and balances that have undoubtedly made us a better university. Hopefully, we will never again receive such a notice."

Again, this is not really much of a response that really takes responsibility. Kind of, "We're sorry, this is not really what we are about, and we've fixed it. It won't happen again. Thanks for your time. Please leave us be, we're fine here."

"Everyone who loves Carolina is truly saddened by these allegations," Hall of Fame basketball coach Roy Williams said in a statement.

This is what makes Roy a huge phony to me. He clearly knew what was going on, as at one point half his players were steered toward and taking these classes. There may not be hard proof in the form of an email, but even UNC fans have to admit he had to know it was happening. He may not have set the system up, but he was at least complicit with and benefiting from the fraud. Maybe he didn't know how fake the fake classes really were, but he should've been asking questions in the interest of keeping a clean program. At worst too, he was completely involved, which we'll never know.

For these reasons, Roy is now a joke to me and many others. I'm sure he's "saddened." He should be saddened by his own involvement, passive or otherwise.

The "Carolina Way" has perished

I reject your premise simply based on the fact that it assumes the Carolina Way ever existed as conceived in the minds of its fanbase. I would argue it never did. :D

I prefer to frame this as the Carolina Way, as it exists in reality, being confirmed and properly revealed. :)

Roy brought an academic advisor from Kansas to unc with him. I would bet there were shenanigans going on at Kansas that "nobody knew about" also.

I feel like the NOA is far worse on women's basketball than anything. Coming in second place was football and then men's basketball. So I think the men's bball sanctions will be fairly benign. maybe something like 1 lost scholly for 2-3 years. No vacated wins, no postseason bans.

We'll see. We're still a long way away on this and the longer it takes the better

As much as I think I'd like to see UNC and their basketball program in shambles, the fact is, I don't want that to happen. As much as I hate them, they make Duke, the ACC, and college basketball better for the competition and rivalry. Remember the late 90s/ early 2000s? It was boring, honestly (well except for beating Maryland all FOUR times in the 2000-01 season). Duke was hugely successful but without its counterpart in the ACC.

I've also always prided our rivalry on being one of the best in all of sports and most of all, two great programs that are respectable and don't cheat. I'm afraid that is tainted now and it won't make the rivalry as special. Duke and UNC are the heart of the ACC and for one of the schools to be involved in such a scandal is devastating.

I want UNC to get crushed by Duke on the basketball court, not by some academic scandal. I want to talk trash to fans about Austin Rivers hitting the dagger, not trash about their cheating. It's gone beyond the rivalry point now. I thought I would enjoy this but I'm actually sad.

To end on a brighter note, perhaps that carowhina author, Andy Douche-Bagwell will write another book called, UNC Sucks.

Completely agree. I have refrained from posting on this matter because, believe it or not, I don't hate Carolina. Yes, I want to beat them every time in every sport, as does any Duke grad, but the rivalry has been special for a long long time. I was fortunate to play against the heels, and it was always an intense game, but for all the right reasons. Think Harvard vs Yale. Same thing. The whole affair has left me sad, but I do not wish devastation on anyone, even the heels. OK, ISIS, maybe.

The Guthridge years were not bad. And you can hardly call the Doherty years boring. ;)

I keep hearing that this will affect only the women's bb team, not the mens bb team, or football. Anyone else hear this??I guess I just dislike them enough to hope they get hit really hard. I worked for a newspaper in this state for 44 years. Most of the writers were tar hole tech grads. It was especially bad on years when they were good. I just wish all the worse for them , what can I say.

I hope the Cheats get absolutely destroyed as a result of this. How can anyone feel sympathy for a program that has systematically cheated for 18+ years while always proclaiming a "holier than thou" attitude? And now that the fraud has come to light what are they doing, apologizing? Hell no, they are acting like they did nothing wrong. The deserve to be severely punished and if it doesn't happen then I will be very disappointed.

Once again , unx publicly illustrates just how they feel about the investigations , the NCAA , the NOA , the rivalry with Duke , rival schools , rival fans , critics , whoever. The one guy who benefited the most from a decades-long scam and SHOULD have been sent packin' a long time ago is rewarded with a new contract and more money. This is why the NOA was released yesterday. Tells ya all ya need to know about the carolina way , unx's priorities and how they feel about the NOA , the NCAA , the rivalry with Duke , rival schools , rival fans , critics , whoever. This is just one more ginormous middle-finger salute to all of that. Nuking them back to the Stone Age is the only thing they'll ever understand. Just hope the NCAA will do it.

Dbav it only existed in the minds of UNcheat fans who long ago convinced themselves that they were legends in their own minds. If you tell yourself something long enough even if not true you'll start to believe it eventually.

This is largest academic scandal ever..hopefully the media will crucify UNC soon...once everyone's perception changes then UNC will fail to be relevant both athletically and academically
